Every few months a new product promises to defend your face from your monitor. Blue light serums. Screen shields for skin. SPF marketed specifically for people who work at a desk.
The claims aren't entirely made up — visible light really does interact with skin in ways UV doesn't. But the dose matters enormously, and most of the marketing skips that part. Here's what the research supports, what it doesn't, and where your attention is actually better spent.
What Blue Light Actually Is
Blue light, also called high-energy visible light or HEV, sits at the short-wavelength end of the visible spectrum, roughly 400 to 500 nanometres. It's just past UVA on the electromagnetic scale — lower energy than ultraviolet, but higher than the rest of the light you can see.
It comes from screens, LED bulbs, and overwhelmingly from the sun. That last point is the one that gets buried. Daylight is the dominant source of HEV exposure by a wide margin, and it isn't close.
The Dose Problem
A phone or laptop held at normal working distance emits blue light at intensities that are orders of magnitude lower than midday daylight. Estimates vary by device and study design, but the general finding is consistent: a few minutes outdoors delivers more HEV than a full workday at a screen.

Wear SPF daily, indoors included. Not because of your laptop, but because UVA passes through window glass and reaches you at your desk all day. That's the exposure most people underestimate.
