Everyone knows you burn faster on the water. Fewer people can say why, and the explanation most often given — that water acts like a mirror, doubling your UV — turns out to be mostly wrong.
Open water is actually one of the weaker reflectors you'll encounter. The real reasons a day on a boat or at the shore wrecks your skin are less obvious, and knowing them changes how you protect yourself.
What Different Surfaces Actually Reflect
Reflected UV is measured as a percentage of incoming radiation bounced back up at you. The numbers are not what most people expect:
- Fresh snow: up to about 80 percent
- Sea foam and breaking surf: roughly 25 percent
- Dry sand: around 15 percent
- Open water: under 10 percent
- Grass and soil: low single digits
Snow is the extreme case, which is why skiers burn so badly and why altitude sunburn catches people off guard. Water sits near the bottom of the list. A calm lake or a still pool is not reflecting much of anything back at you.
The surf line is a different story. White foam scatters light in every direction and roughly doubles what flat water sends back. So do dry sand, white boat decks, painted concrete pool surrounds, and pale patio stone — all of them brighter reflectors than the water itself.
So Why Does Everyone Burn at the Beach?
Because reflection was never the main problem. Three other factors do most of the damage.
There's no shade. This is the big one. A beach, a boat, and a pool deck are all environments with nowhere to escape direct sun, and you stay in them for hours. Duration of unshaded exposure explains beach sunburn far better than any reflection figure. Studies have even found people burning while sitting under umbrellas, because scattered sky radiation reaches you anyway.
You stop noticing the heat. Water, breeze, and cold drinks suppress the discomfort that normally tells you to move into the shade. The UV keeps arriving at the same rate. Your warning system is just switched off.
Sunscreen comes off. Swimming, towelling, and sweating all remove it. Most people apply once at 11am and never again, which means the second half of the day happens with a fraction of the protection they think they have.
The Spots Reflected UV Actually Hits
Here's where reflection genuinely matters, even at modest percentages: it comes from below.
Direct sun hits the tops of your shoulders, nose, and forehead — the places you instinctively cover. Reflected UV travels upward and lands on surfaces that never see direct sun and almost never see sunscreen:
- Under the chin and along the jawline
- The underside of the nose
- The front of the neck
- The tops and backs of the ears
- Backs of the hands
- Tops of the feet
This is why beach burns so often show up in odd places — a red underside of the nose, a scorched neck, feet you forgot entirely. Ten percent reflection over six hours, landing somewhere with zero protection, adds up.
Boats Are the Worst Case
A boat deck combines every problem at once. Sun from above, reflection from the water below, and bounce off white fiberglass decks and hulls all around. Add wind, which dries sweat and makes the heat feel manageable, and you have an environment engineered to burn people who feel perfectly comfortable.
Anyone who's spent a day fishing or sailing knows the result: a burn that shows up at dinner, hours after you got off the water.
Does Being Wet Make It Worse?
Partly. A film of water on skin doesn't block UV meaningfully, and wet skin feels cool enough that you'll stay out longer than you otherwise would. Water also removes sunscreen — which is the actual mechanism behind most "the water made me burn" experiences.
Being in the water is different again. UV penetrates to real depth: at half a metre down you're still receiving a substantial fraction of surface UVA. Swimming is not hiding.
How to Actually Protect Yourself
Apply before you leave, not at the beach. Sunscreen needs 15 to 20 minutes to bind properly. Applying on the sand means the first stretch is effectively unprotected.
