You pull a white shirt out of the drawer at the end of the summer and there it is: a rusty orange smudge across the collar that wasn't there in June. It survived the wash. It survived the second wash. And it is almost certainly your sunscreen.

Sunscreen stains are one of the most common and most misunderstood laundry problems of the season. People blame sweat, deodorant, or the washing machine. The real culprit is usually a specific UV filter reacting with a specific mineral in your tap water. Once you understand what's happening, the stains become largely preventable.

Why Sunscreen Stains Clothes in the First Place

Sunscreen leaves behind two completely different kinds of marks, and they need completely different treatment.

The grease stain. Almost every sunscreen contains emollients, oils, or waxes that help the formula spread evenly and cling to skin through sweat and water. Those same ingredients transfer readily to fabric, where they show up as a darkened, translucent patch — the classic greasy shadow on a collar, a swimsuit strap line, or the inside of a car seat. This is an oil stain, and it responds to the same treatment as salad dressing or cooking oil.

The orange stain. This one is chemical, not greasy, and it is the reason people end up throwing away perfectly good white t-shirts. It is not caused by dirt, sweat, or a tinted formula. It's caused by a single common UV filter.

The Avobenzone Problem: Why Sunscreen Stains Turn Orange

Avobenzone is one of the most widely used UVA filters in American sunscreens. On skin it does its job well. On fabric, it has a quirk: it binds to iron.

If your home has hard water — and a large share of U.S. households do — your tap water carries dissolved minerals including iron. When avobenzone residue on a garment meets iron in wash water, the two react and produce a rust-colored compound. That's the orange. It is essentially a rust stain that your sunscreen created inside your own washing machine.

This explains a few things that otherwise seem strange. It explains why the stain often appears after laundering rather than at the beach. It explains why the same sunscreen stains clothes at one house and not another. And it explains why washing the garment again usually makes the mark worse rather than better: every cycle delivers more iron.

Do Mineral and Tinted Sunscreens Stain Too?

They can, but differently. Mineral sunscreens built on zinc oxide or titanium dioxide don't produce the orange reaction, because there's no avobenzone involved. Instead they can leave a chalky white residue that shows up on dark fabric — the same white cast that shows on deeper skin tones, transferred to your navy shirt.

Tinted formulas are a separate case again. Any sunscreen carrying iron oxide pigments can transfer a small amount of color if you dress before it has settled. This isn't a chemical reaction and it usually lifts easily, but it's a good argument for giving any tinted product a few minutes to absorb. How to Get Sunscreen Stains Out of Clothes

Speed matters more than product choice. A fresh stain is a laundry task; a stain that has been through a hot dryer is a project.

  1. Blot, don't rub. Lift any excess product off the surface with a paper towel or the edge of a spoon. Rubbing pushes oil deeper into the weave.
  2. Pre-treat the grease. Work a small amount of liquid dish soap directly into the mark with your fingers. Dish soap is formulated to cut oil, which is exactly what you need. Let it sit five to ten minutes.
  3. Rinse with cool water from the reverse side of the fabric, pushing the stain out the way it came in rather than through the garment.
  4. For orange marks, treat as rust. Because the discoloration is an iron reaction, a rust remover formulated for fabric is far more effective than a standard stain stick. A non-chlorine, color-safe oxygen stain remover is the safer everyday option.
  5. Wash on the warmest cycle the label allows — heat helps dissolve the oily component.
  6. Air dry and inspect. Never put the garment in the dryer until the mark is completely gone. Dryer heat sets both types of stain more or less permanently.

The One Step That Makes Sunscreen Stains Permanent

Reaching for chlorine bleach. It's the instinct with a white shirt, and it's the worst possible move here. Chlorine bleach reacts with avobenzone residue and can deepen a faint yellow shadow into a dark, set orange mark that no amount of rewashing will lift. Oxygen bleaches are gentler but can still darken the reaction on some fabrics. If you're facing an orange sunscreen stain, treat it like rust, not like a whites problem.

How to Prevent Sunscreen Stains Before They Start

  • Check the active ingredients. If sunscreen stains are a recurring problem in your household, look for a formula without avobenzone.   • Protect your collar and straps. These are the highest-contact points. Give neck and shoulder application a moment longer to settle.
  • Rinse swimwear immediately. Salt, chlorine, and sunscreen residue left to sit overnight in a damp bag is the worst-case scenario for both staining and elastane.
  • Consider a water softener or filtered wash if you live in a hard-water area and the problem is chronic. Less iron in the water means less to react with.

The Bottom Line

Sunscreen stains are annoying, but they are not a reason to skip SPF — a shirt is replaceable, and sun damage isn't. Treat greasy marks with dish soap, treat orange marks like rust, keep chlorine bleach far away from either, and give your sunscreen a few minutes to absorb before you get dressed.
