A sunscreen bottle is one of the few things in your bathroom that's regulated as an over-the-counter drug rather than a cosmetic. That's why the label looks the way it does — there's a Drug Facts panel, a list of active ingredients with percentages, and a set of phrases the manufacturer is legally not allowed to improvise. It also means that once you know what you're reading, the label tells you almost everything you need to know.
Here's how to decode one, section by section.
The SPF number: what it measures and what it doesn't
SPF stands for Sun Protection Factor, and it measures one thing only: protection against UVB, the wavelength that causes sunburn. It says nothing on its own about UVA, the longer wavelength associated with photoaging and pigmentation.
The numbers are also less dramatic than they look. SPF 15 filters roughly 93% of UVB, SPF 30 about 97%, and SPF 50 about 98%. Doubling from 30 to 60 does not double your protection — it adds about one percentage point. The far bigger variable is how much you apply. Lab testing uses 2 mg per square centimeter of skin, which is roughly a quarter teaspoon for the face and a shot glass for the body. Most people apply between a quarter and half of that, which means a bottle of SPF 50 is often performing closer to an SPF 15 in real life.
The practical takeaway: pick a number you're willing to apply generously and reapply, rather than chasing the highest figure on the shelf. For daily face wear, an SPF 50 that feels light enough to use properly — like Summer Gelée SPF 50 Face — will outperform a heavier SPF 70 you apply in a thin, grudging layer.
"Broad spectrum": the phrase that matters most
This is arguably the most important two words on the bottle. In the US, a product can only print "broad spectrum" if it passes a specific test demonstrating meaningful UVA protection proportional to its SPF. Without it, you may be buying pure UVB coverage — protection from burning, but not from the wavelength most responsible for wrinkles, loss of firmness, and dark spots.
You'll also see PA ratings on Asian and some European products, written as PA+ through PA++++. That's a separate UVA scale; more plus signs means more UVA protection. Both systems are trying to answer the same question, so if you see "broad spectrum" or PA+++ and above, you're covered.
Water resistance: 40 or 80 minutes, and nothing else
There are exactly two claims a sunscreen can make here: water resistant (40 minutes) or water resistant (80 minutes). The number is how long the product maintains its stated SPF while you're actually in the water or sweating heavily.
Notice what isn't allowed: "waterproof," "sweatproof," and "all-day protection" were banned years ago precisely because they were misleading. If you see them, you're looking at either a very old bottle or a product that isn't playing by the rules.
Eighty minutes is also a ceiling, not a promise. Toweling off removes sunscreen regardless of what the bottle says, so reapply after you dry off no matter how long you were in.
Active ingredients: the actual UV filters
The Drug Facts panel lists every UV filter and its concentration. They fall into two camps.
Mineral filters are zinc oxide and titanium dioxide. They're photostable, gentle enough for most reactive skin, and effective immediately on application. Their traditional drawback is a white cast, though modern micronized versions have largely solved this.
Organic (chemical) filters include avobenzone, octinoxate, octisalate, homosalate, octocrylene, and in Europe and Asia, newer filters like Tinosorb and Uvinul. They tend to feel lighter and disappear on all skin tones, but some degrade with sun exposure — which is why avobenzone is nearly always paired with a stabilizer like octocrylene.

The inactive ingredients list is where texture lives
Everything below the active ingredients determines how the product feels — and therefore whether you'll actually use it. Scan for alcohol denat. high in the list if your skin runs dry, and for heavy occlusives like dimethicone-heavy bases if you're prone to congestion. Gel and fluid formats generally sit lighter than emulsions, which is why a body gel such as Summer Gelée SPF 30 Body spreads over large areas more easily than a thick cream.
Fragrance is worth flagging too. It's the most common cause of contact reactions in sun care, and it's listed by the single word "fragrance" or "parfum" no matter how many components it contains.
SPF 4 and other low numbers
Low-SPF tanning products are a legitimate category, but they're for a specific job: filtering some UVB while you deliberately develop color, on a body that is not going to be exposed for hours. Expiration dates and batch codes
US sunscreens are required to be stable for three years, and many print an explicit expiration date on the crimp or base of the tube. If there isn't one, look for a period-after-opening symbol (a small open jar marked 12M or 24M) or a batch code you can decode on the brand's site.
Heat matters more than the calendar. A bottle that spent a July in a car has effectively aged years. If the texture has separated, gone watery, or smells off, replace it regardless of the printed date.

Flip the bottle and confirm four things: it says broad spectrum, the SPF is 30 or higher for daily wear, it's water resistant for 40 or 80 minutes if you'll swim or sweat, and the texture is something you'll apply generously. Everything else is refinement.
