What flashback actually is
Certain UV filters work by scattering and reflecting light rather than absorbing it. Titanium dioxide is the biggest culprit; zinc oxide contributes as well. The reason it's invisible in daylight is that a flash is a burst of concentrated, direct light hitting your face from a single point, roughly along the same axis as the lens. The mineral particles reflect a large share of it straight back into the camera. Your skin's natural tone gets overwhelmed, and the sensor records a bright white haze exactly where the product sits.

Why it seems to get worse as the night goes on
Several things stack up. As your skin produces oil, the sunscreen film redistributes and can concentrate in places — around the nose, in the smile lines, along the jaw.
