Why it feels the way it does — on purpose
This is the part people either love immediately or want explained, so here it is plainly.
A true gelée is not a lotion. It leaves the tube as a firm, waxy balm, then melts on contact with warm skin into a thin, glossy oil. That comes from the base: petrolatum, paraffin, ozokerite wax and mineral oil, softened with hydrogenated vegetable oil. That combination is the gelée format. It's what the original used, and it's why a modern water-based "clean" reformulation can never feel like this — swap the base for coconut oil or a light ester blend and you get a pleasant body lotion and lose the gelée entirely.
So yes: it's glossy, and it sits on the skin rather than vanishing into it. That occlusive film is what holds moisture in through a day in the sun, and what makes a tan look wet and deep instead of chalky. If you remember the original, you already know whether that's what you want.
About the scent — it's cassia, not coconut
The fragrance is built on Cinnamomum cassia oil. People describe it as warm and spiced, or sweet and fruity — cinnamon, orange zest, sometimes bubblegum. What it is not is the coconut-suncream smell you may be expecting, and it fades within about ten minutes of application. Some customers say it's their favourite thing about the tube. Why the tube is 3.12 oz — and why that's more than it sounds
A concentrated balm isn't comparable, ounce for ounce, to a pump lotion. It melts and spreads: a pea-sized amount covers a full limb, and most people use a fraction of what they'd reach for out of a bottle. Customers who expected to burn through it in a week routinely report the opposite.
It's also made in the USA in small batches, in a lined metal tube rather than a plastic bottle, and formulated and tested to meet FDA over-the-counter sunscreen requirements. That's where the price sits, and we'd rather explain it than discount it.

No if you want a dry-touch matte sunscreen, you need real all-day UV protection, or a glossy film on your skin isn't your thing. Take SPF 30 or Summer Face SPF 50 instead — genuinely.
How to use
Warm a small amount between your fingers and smooth a thin, even layer over clean skin 15 minutes before sun exposure. Reapply at least every 2 hours, and after swimming, sweating or towel-drying. For extended sun or water exposure, layer with a higher SPF such as Summer Gelée SPF 30. Sunscreen isn't the whole story — limit time in the sun, especially 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., and cover up when you've had enough.
